To be clear, if I click on the "main_document" tab, so that I'm looking at all the include statements when I press f5, then everything works perfectly. Everything I thought would cause this to fail didn't cause it to fail. I can't see any obvious difference between file_B and any of the other files-they all feature references to sections and subsections contained in other files, they all use newcommands defined in the main file. tex document of the following form: \documentclass" errors if I try to run build and compile while editing file_B. The purpose of this is to ease compiling when working with multiple files. I'm working on a project right now where I have one main. TeXstudio allows you to define a given file as a master document. I would still be interested in knowing how TeXstudio keeps track of the fact that one document is being included in another if someone feels like writing about that, but the tech support aspect of my question is no longer pressing. I dont use that myself, but looking at its website, its authors say that 'Clear display of LaTeX errors and warnings (in editor and as list)' is a feature.
